Parkinson’s Friendly Tai Chi Chih

10:30 to 11:30 a.m., Wednesdays

July 9 to August 27, 2014

This beginning-level class is for those who are interested in learning T’ai Chi Chih, a moving meditation based on the Chinese philosophy of promoting vitality, longevity, inner peace, balance and joy. Experience more abundant health, relieve stress and heighten mind-body awareness.

Participants may perform the T’ai Chi Chih movements standing, seated or using a chair for balance. Wear comfortable clothing and flat, soft-soled shoes or heavy socks. This activity is cosponsored by HealthEast Capistrant Center and is a Parkinson’s Friendly program. Please consult your movement disorders specialist and care team before beginning any exercise program.

Struthers Movement Boosters

This is a comprehensive, active exercise class designed to work on increased strength, flexibility, balance and agility. It emphasizes larger movements. Capistrant Fitness III

Fitness  III is a seated group designed for participants who may need more significant help with activities of daily living. This class will provide appropriate exercise and group activities to counteract the long term emotional impact of PD.  $5 per session

This unique exercise program stresses components of strengthening, stretching and aerobics.  Fitness classes are supervised by a recreation therapist who will provide guidance to complete exercises, provide assistance as appropriate and monitor response to exercise. The recreational therapists are trained professionals with experience working with people with Parkinson’s disease. Fitness I, II and III are designed to provide fitness opportunities for participants across the continuum of their disease. A free Fitness Assessment is required prior to joining Fitness I, II or III classes.

Capistrant Fitness I

Fitness 1 is designed for participants who can self-direct their exercise program, walk independently with/out assistive device, and need hands-on assistance less than 50 percent of the time. $5 cost per session.

This unique exercise program stresses components of strengthening, stretching and aerobics.  Fitness classes are supervised by a recreation therapist who will provide guidance to complete exercises, provide assistance as appropriate and monitor response to exercise. The recreational therapists are trained professionals with experience working with people with Parkinson’s disease. Fitness I, II and III are designed to provide fitness opportunities for participants across the continuum of their disease. A free Fitness Assessment is required prior to joining Fitness I, II or III classes.

Fitness  II is designed for participants who need minimal hands-on assistance with walking and transferring and moderate direction for exercise participation. Cost $7 per session.

This unique exercise program stresses components of strengthening, stretching and aerobics.  Fitness classes are supervised by a recreation therapist who will provide guidance to complete exercises, provide assistance as appropriate and monitor response to exercise. The recreational therapists are trained professionals with experience working with people with Parkinson’s disease. Fitness I, II and III are designed to provide fitness opportunities for participants across the continuum of their disease. A free Fitness Assessment is required prior to joining Fitness I, II or III classes.

Struthers Club CREATE Therapeutic Day Program

Capistrant Fitness Assessment

Free fitness assessments are available Wednesday afternoon and are required prior to participating in the fitness classes. You will meet with a physical therapist for a 30 minute assessment to evaluate your walking, balance, strength and more. To make an appointment call 651-326-2178.
