Movement is medicine. Movement is key to treating symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. NPFM with the support of their People with Parkinson’s Leadership Board are working to identify Parkinson friendly exercise classes and programs throughout the state. A “Parkinson-friendly” fitness  designation means the venue has completed Parkinson awareness  training. A Parkinson friendly designation does not mean that the organizations are Parkinson experts.

Note: These programs are listed for information sharing only. Please consult your movement disorders specialist and care team before beginning any exercise program.

Eden Prairie Community Center – include a fitness center complete with top-of-the-line cardio equipment, resistance training and free weights, three group fitness studios, two eight-lane, 25-yard lap pools with two diving boards and a climbing wall, a zero-depth entry recreation pool, spa, water slide, two full-sized racquetball courts, three ice rinks, men’s and women’s locker rooms, a family locker room and several rooms available for private parties, meetings and gatherings.

Southdale YMCA – offers over 180 group exercise classes weekly, personal training, swim lessons and other great fitness and community building programs. Itasca County Family YMCA  – At the Itasca County Family YMCA, our most important goal has always been to enrich the lives of kids, teens, families, and older adults in our community. They recommend the following classes for people with Parkinson’s.    Facebook page

AOA TRX – This TRX class is specific for Active Older Adults and primary focus is on flexibility, mobility and a little strength.

Tai Chi for Balance – Practicing tai chi helps older adults improve their balance and reduce the likelihood of falling. Research has found that people who attend this class are half as likely to fall and are less fearful about falling. This class use a chair.

Flexible Strength – This class works on strength, balance and flexibility. Great for seniors, beginners and injury rehab members. This class uses a chair.

SilverSneakers® – Classic –  Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range or movement, and activity for daily living skills. Hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a ball are offered for resistance, and a chair is used for seated and/or standing support

Regions Hospital – offers aquatic therapy and classes in a warm-water pool. The warmth and buoyancy of the pool allows for improved tolerance for exercise than on land.
